TOGETHER, WE CAN MOVE PHILADELPHIA FORWARD
Saving Public Transportation
Public transportation is the key to any city’s infrastructure. We must take immediate action to improve our current failing system.
SEPTA will have a $325 million dollar deficit for the 2007 fiscal year. This is unacceptable and Philadelphia alone cannot bear the burden. SEPTA is a regional transportation system, and thus, there must be a region-wide effort to improve performance and service. We must work with the state and federal government to ensure a dedicated funding source.
SEPTA is critical to the economy of Philadelphia, providing thousands of jobs and daily transportation for hundreds of thousands of people. Given the vital role SEPTA plays in our economy, City Council has not been as involved as it should be. The City Council’s Transportation Committee must play a greater role in advocating for the system and pushing for reforms.
Once increased funding is secured, we should invest in a card swipe access system that other cities, like New York and Boston, currently have.
SEPTA must also become safer and more efficient. While the recently rededicated Frankford Transportation Center is a model, too many people are concerned about their safety at terminals and stops. Public transpiration ridership will increase if we make it a safer experience.
We should also look at best practice models from other cities to increase efficiency. In Los Angeles, they have increased the speed of routes by up to 25% by making simple changes.
